"Bailly prepared this treatise after becoming the fencing master of Amsterdam, to where he moved in 1602, and before 1608, when the work was included in a catalogue of the library of Prince Maurice (Galas and Steenput, 2011). Before coming to Amsterdam, Bailly had a rather colourful life in Leiden. For a full discussion of Bailly’s interesting life, the reader is referred to Galas and Steenput (2011). Whereas Bailly’s Cort Bewijs is a short work with only 24 pages (including the frontispiece), each sHOWing one illustration with minimal text, the illustrations were most likely drawn by Pieter Bailly HIMSELF, and they contain a number of cunningly deviced clues to help interpret the actions sHOWn."
